Here is the latest Vannamei in India update given by Indian friends
Steady harvests are happening in all regions, and factories are getting a healthy inflow. More quantities are available in the smaller sizes (70 to 100 counts). Consequently, farmgate prices have come down for the smaller sizes, but the larger sizes prices continue to remain firm.
Peak season is likely to be over by mid July. Harvests will continue, but quantities are expected to be lower. This may impact the smaller players more.
Demand continues to be strong from the US as well as the EU, and orders have been booked up to August shipment. There are some indications that there could be a slowdown post August, but packers are more focused on the present, and trying to produce and ship out the pending orders.
Far East markets are still not very active. Packers feel that importers in China are waiting for the prices to go down, which may not happen in a while. The bids from Chinese buyers are lower than 2 weeks before, but not much sales are happening at those prices. Irrespective of the prices, packers expect activity from China to pick up soon.
Labor situation has eased out and is much better now - when compared to 2 weeks back. However, most factories are still struggling with the production of the smaller sized PND shrimp. The backlogs are mostly on account of the small PNDs. It is not an availability issue but more of a production issue.
Ocean freight continues to be a killer. Adding to the woes - most liners are declining door moves and inland destinations (USA). This could impact the plans of many importers who now have to rework the routing and incur additional costs.
