Shrimp situation in Mekong delta, Viet Nam

Recent days, because the pandemic is being worse worldwide so that farmers are selling shrimp much to avoid dropping of prices lower further, so the prices of Vannamei in Mekong delta are dropping daily

For Vannamei raw material, most of agents are buying at these prices:

20 pcs/kg: 185,000 – 190,000 vnd/kg

25 pcs/kg: 157,000 – 160,000 vnd/kg

30 pcs/kg: 135,000 – 138,000 vnd/kg

40 pcs/kg: 120,000 – 123,000 vnd/kg

50 pcs/kg: 108,000 – 110,000 vnd/kg

60 pcs/kg: 103,000 – 105,000 vnd/kg

70 pcs/kg: 100,000 – 103,000 vnd/kg

80 pcs/kg: 92,000 – 98,000 vnd/kg

90 pcs/kg: 85,000 – 90,000 vnd/kg

100 pcs/kg: 80,000 – 83,000 vnd/kg

And, the farmers do not stock baby shrimp again because they worry the prices could drop deeply in peaking harvesting season in April-May-June if the coronavirus pandemic isn’t controlled soon

Mr. Richard Nguyen - Managing director of Seabina Co.,ltd predicts some following scenarios:

1/ The supply of shrimp would be limited in April-May-June but the prices would be still maintained at low level because the demand of all markets is still being low

2/ The prices could slightly increase in July-Aug-Sep because of limited supply and demand is bouncing back after the world has vaccine and medicines against coronavirus

3/ After the world completely controls the pandemic and people are getting confident again then people will spend much after many months isolating at homes and restricting movement, so the demand in the end of year would be boom and the prices of shrimp would increase much in Oct-Nov-Dec

4/ If the pandemic lasts badly through this year then shrimp industry particularly and seafood generally would have a grey year

For the prices of black tiger are still being stable because farmers just grow extensively in Bac Lieu, Ca Mau and Kien Giang, so the supply is not much. However; if the market is not good continuously then the prices of black tiger could be down in April – May – June (these months farmers harvest black tiger shrimp much)

20 pcs/kg: 250,000 vnd/kg

30 pcs/kg: 185,000 vnd/kg

40 pcs/kg: 156,000 vnd/kg

50 pcs/kg: 125,000 vnd/kg

60 pcs/kg: 105,000 vnd/kg

Mostly, HOSO black tiger shrimp is for China market, if China gets strong again then the prices of black tiger will increase sharply in next months
